Yep. A dishwasher. It’s a thing! In the world of living tiny, counter space is at a premium. If you’re off-grid, so is water. For both these reasons, plus the obvious reason that washing dishes is no fun, a dishwasher actually can be a great addition to a Tiny House.

Most people don’t realize just how efficient a dishwasher can be. In one study from the University of Bonn, referenced in this great Treehugger article, it was shown that a “dishwasher uses only half the energy, one-sixth of the water, and less soap” than hand washing. A dishwasher is also a great tool for cleaning many things you’d never think of!

Granted, a full-sized dishwasher takes up a lot of room, usually a 24″ wide section of under-counter space that could be used for cabinets and much-needed storage. But fear not! There are smaller options. I personally have an 18″ wide unit that takes up less space, similar to this one. or if you’re seeking something classier, check out this unit.

There is also the option of a fancy drawer-style dishwasher. The only real option on the market is made by Fisher Paykel and is 24″ wide x approximately 18″ tall. It works well in a Tiny House but has a premium price.

The last option is less wonderful but still useful. It’s a countertop model. Made to be movable, it’s also possible to integrate it into your cabinetry or create a custom spot for it. Simple and inexpensive, they can make your life simpler without taking up the space of a full-sized unit.

The last thing to think about is your water system. If you’re like many people in the land of Tiny and not hooked up to a municipal sewer system, then you’re probably using a grey water system that runs to a french drain, septic system or maybe even a vermiculture system. It’s very important to use a non-toxic, biodegradable dishwasher detergent, such as Method’s Detergent Packs, that won’t damage the environment or your helpful worms…

A dishwasher in a Tiny House? Seriously?!
